Carnival of Florenville
The most important carnival in the province of Luxembourg. The parade on Sunday gathers several hundreds of participants (parade floats and folklore groups). It draws several thousands of people.
The Brotherhood of Sossons d'Orvaulx – founded in 1977
Its purposes :
- promoting the Trappist beer and the cheese of the Orval abbey;
- protecting the traditions, the customs and the Gaumais dialect;
- making the regions of Orval, Florenville and their touristic characteristics known;
- helping the unfortunates;
- participating at social actions and applying its motto.
Motto : « Fayez toudjou l'bin t't-autou d'vou avu l'cûr lôrdge ét amitieu » (Always make everyone around you happy with big heart and friendship).
Outfit : long orange and brown lawyer's gown with an orange beret and medal.
The Brotherhood is led by a board of directors called « Grand conseil », the general assembly is called « Chapitre des togés ».
The annual chapter (induction ceremony and meal) takes place on the last Sunday of April in Orval, Villers-devant-Orval, Florenville or any other district near Florenville.
Les Chamaillots
The non-profit association LES CHAMALLOTS was founded in 1951. This association from Florenville is based on the friendship and fellowship between its members.
The chamaillot is someone who enjoys life and is a joke lover. He loves tricking you but never in a mean way. He especially likes laughing and make people laugh as well.
This « Chamaillot » spirit is special in Florenville and it reflects the joker's character that Gaumais people have.
Motto : « Restan toudjou bin assan »: We always have to remain together (in a good mood, friendship and solidarity).
Outfit
For men: boater, dark blue coat, red spotted handkerchief, white and red lined trousers and clogs.
For women: boater, red and white corsage, red handkerchief, dark blue skirt, white apron and clogs.
